LAURENT FIGNON

Laurent Fignon was one of France’s greatest and most enigmatic cyclists. From 1982 to 1993, with his blonde hair flowing, he won more than 75 races and was one of the most lucrative in the sport. Yet as much as the French adore their cycling stars, Fignon often alienated his fans and fellow riders.  He was brusque, often considered arrogant and never reluctant to snatch victory away from deserving teammates in a race. He struck photographers, and ignored reporters and fans. Journalists awarded him their Prix Citron, the lemon prize for the least likeable rider in the 1989 Tour.  “At least I won something,” he later said.
