JACQUES ANQUETIL
The streamlined perfection of Jacques Anquetil’s riding style, will be etched into the history books forever. Although his wins were never spectacular, his major tour victories were always carefully planned and steadily ridden. Anquetil was the first cyclist to win the Tour de France five times (1957, 1961-64). An acknowledged patron of the peloton, he exploited its unique protocols with expert subtlety and gave his winning bonuses to his team mates, granting them the occasional victory, in order to secure the loyalty of the men who would work for him on the most gruelling days of a three-week stage race. In an era when all the top professionals doped, Anquetil believed it would be hypocritical to pretend otherwise. “You can’t ride the Tour de France on mineral water,” he once famously said.
